Technical Large Animal Rescue, Operations Level

PRACTICE DOES NOT MAKE PERFECT.
ONLY PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.
                                               -Vince Lombardi

This distance learning module replaces the classroom portion of the Technical Large Animal Rescue, Operations Level course. Participants are expected to review the material presented and complete a quiz before attending hands-on skills sessions. (The quiz is "open book" and is intended to ensure that all participants are aware of the risks involved and best safe practices.)

SECTION I: BASIC OVERVIEW

Technical Large Animal Rescue (TLAR) often involves the application of infrequent skills, teamwork, and coordination between agencies and other entities operating at an incident. While these course materials focus on TLAR team skills development, it is advantageous for responders from other disciplines (e.g., animal control, fire, law enforcement) to be aware of safety issues and best practices. It is important that everyone operating at a scene has some awareness as to what other responders and teams will be doing.

The greatest emphasis presented in this module will involve horses as horses are the most common large animal species requiring technical rescue. However the same principles and practices generally apply to other large animal species.
