Volunteers Training for Emergencies

  HELMETS

Updated June 7, 2025

Helmets are required for all field operations and training exercises. Our traditional combination rescue helmets have been phased out for more contemporary designs, Bullard forestry type helmets for general operations and Petzl Vertex Vent helmets for technical rescues, rappelling, etc. The Petzl helmets come with four-point suspensions making them more stable during complex operations.

Helmet colors indicate the members' positions on the team. Supervisors are white. Captains are red. Crew members are yellow / lime-yellow. Safety Officers are lime-green. Veterinarians are blue.

Members are issued contemporary helmets as part of their personal safety gear. Older helmets are carried on response units as "spares" in the event a member doesn't have a helmet during a response.
