Saddle Horses!

It is not our intent to put these horses under saddle as their purpose is to be in a display, however we thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to get them used to the feel and movement of a saddle while doing "ordinary" activities.

The "body wrap" helped prepare these horses for the sensation of carrying a saddle. Each horse did quite well and had little difficulty getting used to it. Magic had previously been saddled so this was a walk in the park for him.

Walking out easily!
While we didn't have an opportunity to take pictures, Spirit did wonderfully in the horse course. Also we did brief lifts on each horse so that they could experience human weight in the saddle. One person would ask the horse to lower his head using a clicker target (using an object or simply the back of the hand) while another person would put weight in the stirrup. This approach kept the horse from "hollowing out" and getting uptight. We didn't want to wear this out and just tried for a couple of good lifts on each horse before calling it a day.
