Janet's report for 12-09-01

People in attendance Jackie, Leilani and Janet

Jackie was able to make it out today for the first time since before Thanksgiving. She jumped right in and grabbed Frosty and Leilani went right for Magic. They both got them shined up and looking nice. Leilani got the saddle pad out and began working with him towards getting the horse blanket on him. After about 20 minutes he was willingly accepting the saddle pad being placed on him easily, so we moved on to the horse blanket. We did a lot of advance and retreat and within about 10 minutes Magic was accepting the horse blanket without any problems. It was quite small on him though so we did up minimal straps and Leilani took him for a walk so he could get used to the feel.

Jackie next pulled Dusty and got him cleaned up nicely. She then did some work with the saddle blanket and just getting him used to wearing it and carrying it around. Since this was his first exposure to the blanket she called it good at that.

I did some work with Fancy and Rosie and just worked on being able to approach them easily without them being concerned about me having a halter. Then I grabbed a curry comb and started brushing Rosie. She was thoroughly enjoying the scratches and I think Fancy knew it. As soon as Rosie started "humming" Fancy was right there leaning all over both of us looking for the attention. I finished with Rosie and proceeded on to Fancy. They were quite comical to watch and be a part of. I got first hand experience of the "burro sandwich".

Leilani next worked with Gator and Spirit and Jackie pulled Frosty back out to put the horse blanket on him. Next she pulled Mo and groomed him. About this time they both needed to get going so Cliff and I stuck around to work with Yogi and Jack.

First I went to get Yogi. I stepped inside the gate and Yogi walked from the bottom of the paddock about half way up to meet me. As soon as I called his name and showed him the cookie I had he walked the rest of the way up to me. WOW what a feeling. He did walk away after I gave him the cookie but I was able to approach him and put the lead rope over his neck. He is now seeking the halter and will easily slide his nose into it when it is presented to him. I walked him out to the grooming station and cleaned him up. Which included brushing out his tail and getting the tangles out and cleaning his feet.

His back feet are starting to get a little long so I asked Cliff to take a look at them. It took a few minutes for Yogi to allow him to approach him and I had to stay at his head to comfort him. Cliff was able to use his hoof knife and get some of the over grown frog out but said he would need to wait and trim his feet next week after he sharpened his knife again and let his hands rest. Just for the sake of trying I got the saddle blanket out. After a few advance and retreat approaches I was able to easily place the saddle blanket over his back and ask him to carry it. Cliff helped me of course and then worked with him a bit so that I could take some pictures.

It was getting late and starting to get cold so I went out and put a halter on Jack and brought him in to get his grain. I just petted him all over and then turned him back out.
