Horses & burros still available from the 2006
Wild Horse U adoption at Palomino Valley.
(Continued from Part Two.)
Please note: This list is compiled to our best knowledge and we will try to keep it updated, but all animals are subject to prior adoption. Please check with the
National Wild Horse and Burro Center to determine the availability of any specific animals. Please also note that this list does not include weanling horses and burros that were not part of the volunteer gentling activities. Thus there are a number of additional animals available at the facility that BLM will be happy to place with qualified adopters.
The animals in this listing received from between 1½ to three hours work during Wild Horse U, the purpose of which was primarily to desensitize the animals to people and to determine which approaches seemed to work best with each horse, the assumption being that many adopters prefer to employ their own training methods. Anyone having questions about how a horse behaved during training sessions are welcome to contact the
LRTC Wild Horse Mentors.
Horse 5061, 5 year old buckskin mare

Lead Trainer: Tony Sumner (only one session)
Can easily walk up and touch with the pole. Could rub on near side and down to ankles on front and back legs. This mare settles pretty fast and could have progressed quite a bit if we had more time to work her.

Horse 5092, yearling bay gelding

Lead trainers: Jim Rea & Tony Sumner
Session 1: Smart. Turned right and left inside and outside. Used pole but worked mostly on the right side. Students kept him curious.
Session 2: Worked well in the round pen. Would turn and face up. Polled on both sides. Needs a little more work on his flanks (a little goosey there.) Nice and can be quiet, but needs to learn that standing still is really the best place to be.

Horse 5150, 2 year old roan gelding

Lead trainer: Jim Rea (only one session)
Started out very spunky and sensitive and was mainly focused on other horses. Concentrated on changing directions and getting focused and settled. Not enough time to really engage this horse, however with calm, quiet approaches this horse should settle in and learn.

Easy to poll. Faced up and stepped up to be touched early on. Worked with ropes including on his face. Could have haltered if we had a little more time.

Burro 5247, 5 year old gray Jack

Lead Trainer: Willis Lamm (only one session)
What a nice burro! Quickly settled in and could be touched and scratched all over by participants in about a half hour. Used neck loop and worked on basic yields to pressure. This guy is calm but willing and smart.
