OLYMPIC WILD HORSE & BURRO PROJECT
Part Nine

9-2-01; Milestones!

Sunday was an interesting day. We expected a few volunteers except a nearby island was on fire and the smoke was terrible, irritating both the throat and eyes. We also had made arrangements to pick up a rescue burro in the morning. Sharon was nursing a sore hip and rested after the rescue haul. That left just Hue and Willis with the horses.

Hue started out by working with Spirit. She sprayed some Bach flower remedies onto some bits of hay before and during the workouts. Some horses find these remedies calming. Spirit relaxed quite a bit, allowing Hue onto his "forbidden" side. Hue polled him for some time and was able to touch him. By the end of a few short sessions, either one of us could walk up to Spirit on either side off-lead and make contact.

Easy pole work and facing up too!
While Hue was working I took Magic and Dusty for walks around the stable. Magic and I also killed some time in the horse course. This was his first time away from the gentling pens and he took all the obstacles except the pit. (I felt he wasn't ready and there was no need to push things.) Later Hue took Magic back out so I could photograph his progress.

Hue also worked with Dusty. She took him through some of Frank Bell's "Seven Steps" and did other rope work. She led him around as well. Dusty did quite well. Unfortunately most of the images I took were recorded on a defective disk and were lost. I was able to at least get the image on the right to come out.
