Knightsen Animals in Utah

10-20-01

Saturday morning dawned and the new arrivals from California seemed to be settling in. The Utah volunteers arrived and we took the three California and three Utah horses out into a pasture for a walk and to get familiar with each other. A dog charged the fence as Janet was leading Yogi past some construction materials and he broke free and managed to find himself in the midst Janet's personal "herd." The herd wasn't too happy to have such a sudden visitor and Yogi seemed genuinely happy to be rescued by Janet.

The Utah group put together a barbecue lunch. While we were eating we let the burros loose to wander the place. They earlier had been nicely groomed so naturally they immediately proceeded to paw out a dust bowl and take dust baths. Herbie played with Fancy and taught her to honk the bicycle horn.

After lunch we put Yogi in the "human round pen" where we surrounded him with people. He appeared to deal with all the humans in his space very reasonably. Janet demonstrated some "cloverleaf" drills with Frosty. Various volunteers spent some close-up and personal time with the animals and before we knew it, the day was over.

On Sunday Janet treated us to a wonderful tour of historic Salt Lake City in one of the Carriage for Hire carriages where she and Cliff drive during tourist season. The weather and tour were both delightful and relaxing before our long journey home.

After the carriage ride we went back to the corrals, said goodbye to our four legged friends, and made the return trip to California.
