OLYMPIC WILD HORSE & BURRO PROJECT
Part Fifteen

Suzy and Dusty

Progress Reports

Spirit

Now that Spirit is no longer head shy and "stuck" when it comes to moving to the right, things are starting to happen.

Jenny haltered him and worked him over the cavaletti. He did well. Later Willis took him out for a walkabout around the stable near the hay barn. He did quite well and even posed for the lower right photo.

No more head shyness
Working nicely on lead
Freedom is its own reward
Dusty

Dusty got some work in the round corral with Suzi with help from Willis. By the end of the session, he was out and about sporting a trendy green bareback pad.

It was still a bit premature to climb aboard, and he still has a couple of old fight bites healing up on his back. but he is definitely on the road to being a saddle horse.

Doing what horses do best
Magic

Jean Anderson took Magic out for a more advanced workout on the horse course. We set the cavaletti to their highest level, he went over the large culvert and through the truck tire.

His approach over the large culvert was particularly interesting as he quietly lifted both front feet over at once, then both hinds.

Cavaletti crossings
Practicing on the tire
Quietly "hopping" the culvert
The Burro Girls

The burros basically make themselves at home. They think they are the stable mascots. Today they quietly patrolled and explored the entire perimeter of the stable, periodically returning to the area of their paddock.

Their favorite spot seemed to be the manger where the "old folks" always scatter some hay.
