Janet's report for 11-01-01

People in attendance: Jackie, Nancy, Cliff, Janet, and Faren (Utah BLM)

Tonight was our first time working with the new arrivals (Lifesavers horses). We were all excited and looking forward to the adventure. Nancy started out with Jack. Darice had mentioned that he needed work and reinforcement on just about everything. So Nancy started out by just trying to get a halter on him. It took her a little time. Jack is very good at avoiding people, but with the help of a progress string she was able to catch him and he haltered very nicely. She then did some leading with him and called it good for the night.

Jackie worked with Gator. What a charmer he is and also quite the little rascal. He is very easy to catch and halter, really seems to love human attention but is very good at stirring up trouble with the other horses. Jackie groomed him up nicely and then did some work with disengagements. The pictures of her are a little dark because we were working at night and the lights weren't conducive to good picture taking but were wonderful to work by.

Nancy then pulled out Mohawk and was able to halter him pretty easily. She worked on just being able to touch him everywhere and also lead him a little. She took him out of the round pen so that Faren could do some work with Dusty.

Faren worked on disengagements and leading properly with Dusty. He can be a little stinker at times also when he wants to test a new person. Faren did wonderful with him and we hope to get her out here more often to work with the horses.

Then of course Nancy had to bring Moose out and Jackie brought Frosty out for some grooming and loving.

Janet's report for 11-02-01

People in attendance today: Sharron, Nancy, Janet, and Jackie.

When I first arrived I put Yogi in the round pen so that I could clean his stall. Once Sharron and Nancy arrived Sharron came in and petted Yogi a bit and then we put him back in his stall. Yogi has been lame for a couple of days and we didn't want to stress the injury.

Nancy then pulled out Gator and began working with him. Gator apparently has learned that when he doesn't want to do something he just tucks his head and "leaves". So Nancy brought Gator into the round pen and after a little "attitude problem", Gator began to respond nicely to Nancy's cues and was longing on a loose line. She worked on disengagements and they were absolutely lovely together.

Then Sharron worked with Spirit and Nancy worked with Moose, while catching Moose we also caught Frosty and he spent some time at the tie pole. Sharron groomed Spirit and spent some "quiet time" with him and then walked him around our obstacle course. Nancy groomed Moose and then did some work with the saddle blanket. She then took him in and did some fence work with him and was able to sit on his back. He stayed very relaxed with Nancy on his back at the fence. Then as she was putting him away she asked him to walk across a tarp which he did very willingly.

Next Sharron grabbed Magic and spent some time grooming him. He really didn't want his tail brushed out though, but Sharron was persistent and quiet and did get it looking wonderful. The she groomed Frosty while he was being so good at the tie pole.

Nancy then grabbed Frosty and worked with him on getting him to walk over the tarp. It took a little encouragement and reinforcement but she was able to get him to walk over it as well.

Jackie made it out kind of late and she did some work with Mohawk which included grooming. Then she spent some time in the paddock spending "quiet time" with whomever would hang out with her. She and Sharron got Dusty groomed without putting any halter on.

I then pulled Yogi out and put him in a different stall so that Cliff could move some sand around with the tractor. Yogi spooked as he was coming out of the round pen and got away from me. He came back within a short time and led very nicely to the stall. He seemed to enjoy stretching his legs so we will definitely be doing more of that once the bigger "turnout" area is ready and his leg is no longer bothering him.

Our next task was to round up the burros, who are becoming quite accustomed to roaming the property while we are there, and put them in their stall. We haltered Fancy very easily but she wasn't too keen on leading. So we worked on picking up feet for a while and then Jackie came in behind and gave her a little motivation with noise. Sharron put a halter on Rosie and so Jackie jumped back and forth behind the 2 to keep them moving. And of course Belle just followed along. Once in their stall we haltered Belle as well and picked up her front feet.

That's where we called it a day.
