Janet's report for 11-04-01

People in attendance: Jackie, Janet, and Cliff

Today, Sunday, was another beautiful day. Jackie once again made the trek out to our place. She began work with Jack and was able to approach and halter him fairly quickly. Cliff began with Gator. Cliff forgot the warning about Gators little habit and Gator was able to get away from him once, but not without a heck of a good try from Cliff. Gator was easy to catch back up and Cliff brought him into the round pen so he could have him a little more confined. Cliff was also able to analyze better and see where his Evasion starts. As soon as you see him drop his inside shoulder you can give him a quick little reminder to stick with the program and he continues on with his duties. He is somewhat mischievous and quite the little character. Cliff and Gator made friends afterwards and spent some "male bonding time".

Jackie had Jack outside the round pen and was taking him over some obstacles. She also did some TTouch and massages with him. Jack seemed to relax and really enjoy it and Jackie told me how much she really liked Jack. He is a very sweet "big" horse who also needs the quiet reinforcement. Jill has done a great job with him.

Since it has been somewhat cold a few nights we went ahead and wormed the burros and the KBR horses. The horses took it like a champ but the burros wanted nothing to do with it. Especially Rose who suddenly decided she wanted nothing to do with a halter. Note to self that the burros must be haltered several times a week. :o)

With the morning feed I had given Yogi some Bute and Isosoprine to possible help with his leg. His leg appeared to be much better but mid afternoon so we thought we would give him a little work. Jackie put him in the round pen and after some advance and retreat was able to approach him and get a halter on him. She is the first person, besides me, to be able to halter him. Yogi remained calm but would twitch constantly with Jackie's touch.

Yogi's feet had become overgrown so I wanted to try to do some work with them and see if he would allow it. I first brought in a hoof pick and cleaned them out. Then I found an old rasp and filed on the fronts a little. He seemed pretty tolerant so I assumed the pose, you know like the farrier does with one front leg wrapped around through the inside of his leg and filed a little with the rasp. Yogi stayed relaxed and calm, which was so exciting. I did this with each front foot. Of course since it was an old rasp I didn't do much to the feet but it gave him the sensation anyway. Since Yogi still is not really comfortable with Cliff I guess I am going to need a crash course on trimming his feet now.

I also played with his hinds. It didn't go as smoothly because I wasn't positioning right so that he could keep his balance but Cliff was able to coach me and we were able to get both back feet of the ground, one at a time of course, and extended out behind him and rubbing on them. I also managed to get Yogi to cuddle with me and he even began to fall asleep. He has come such a long way in the last few weeks and it is so very exciting.
