Janet's report for Feb. 9.

Today was opening day at Solider Hollow. Our day started at 2:00 am so that we could be up, have the horses fed and be ready to greet visitors by 7:00.

The day started out cold but quickly warmed as the sun came over the mountain. Wow what a beautiful day. The horses were all wonderful when we got up there. The park has expanded their corral by 20 more feet and added another rail to make it a regulation pen. The boys and girls were very excited to see us so we had to go in and love on them first off.

As the sun came up we got our first glimpse of the venue and wow what a view. We could see the bulk of the cross country course. Anytime a race would be going the horses would perk up and watch the skiers go by. The crowds swarming by the boys and girls didn't seem to bother them at all. In fact they acted as if no one were there but us. Karen Malloy arrived and went right to work grooming so we jumped right in and went to work as well. We had the boys and girls shined up and looking fine for their debut in no time.

We had a ton of visitors all day long and we were the hit of the venue. No one could believe the boys and girls were actually "wild animals."

After they had almost cleared the park of visitors at the end of the day we had somewhat of a celebrity visitor. Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton. We invited her into the pens and offered her the horn. She had great fun getting all the boys to gather around and honk the horn for her. Her photographer took some great pictures. Cliff was able to get a few as well. It was a great pleasure to meet Secretary Norton.

Then it was time to feed again and call it a day.

Two weeks later the Paralympics were held in the same venue. The displays remained and the the remainder of the animals were trailered over to relieve their counterparts where they remained on display during the Paralympics. Afterwards all the animals were offered for adoption through BLM's internet adoption program.
